Reading Profile

I have always read thematically—be it genre or topic. As soon as I was able to read, I touched nothing but world mythologies and fairy tales which eventually turned into tale retellings once I was a preteen—Robin McKinley, Gail Carson Levine, and Shannon Hale (I’m only 26) are still some of my favorite authors. During high school I only read classic literature, usually of the Russian variety, which carried me through my undergrad. In the year between graduating college and beginning to work at a public library, I only read nonfiction—medieval travelers, Greco-Roman biographies, etc. However, now that I closely work with teens, I now tend to read a lot of YA, graphic novels, and manga. My true genre love is still with Fantasy—especially books influenced by fairy tales and mythology. I’m just about obsessed with anything Naomi Novik has written and I just finished Katherine Arden’s The Girl in the Tower earlier this week; I have been and will continue to be an emotional wreck until I get my hands on her final book in the trilogy.

In 2018, I read exactly 50 books—most of which were manga and children’s literature. My goals for 2019 are to at least read one book a week as well as to write more book reviews on my Goodreads account. I’m also preapproved for some advanced reader copies (ARC) through Netgalley and so I would love to begin reviewing those—probably not for this class.

  1. I really need to start writing reviews on GoodReads for everything I read. I have been a "lurker" so far, not even leaving a rating, but this class has inspired me to start practicing writing reviews and annotations so leaving reviews seems like a good place to start. Do you usually leave reviews? What is your experience with posting them on Goodreads? Is there many responses or is it more just for your own personal notes?

    1. Also, hello again! We were in the Public Library Management course together, right? (And in the same group for the budgeting group project?)

    2. Hello Zach! We do meet again!

I rarely leave reviews. Sometimes I only have vague feelings of "I liked this" and that's not review-worthy. I rarely get any responses on the few reviews I do post on Goodreads, but the friends who I see in person that can view my reviews have commented on it personally.

  2. I love when I get so invested in a series that I feel that way about it. Absolutely *love* it. Good luck reaching your reading goal! I always keep mine low because life always gets in the way of my loftier ones. That way if I surpass them I get happy! :) But between kids and work I read a TON of picture books, so I wonder if I could add them all up and count those as novels? Maybe I could get like 5-8 more books counted? Hmmm... ;)

  3. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with series that I get addicted to and can't wait until the next one comes out. I have been known to not pick up a series until I know for sure that it is completed to avoid frustration! The last book series I picked up that wasn't complete was a YA series written by Travis Thrasher called the Solitary Tales. It was spooky and fit well with all of my teen angst I was carrying around at the time! I also read a lot of graphic novel when I was still working in Youth Services. My supervisor got me hooked on the Nailbiter series by Joshua Williamson. OMG!!! I read them all in one day and was totally unproductive at work. #Noshame! I fell in love with the art and the story line. It just hit all the right spots for me! You should check it out sometime if you are into mysteries and horror!

  4. Great reading profile, full points! I am a goodreads worshiper. I just wished I had starting using the app before 2011, I would love to have a record of all the books I read before then!
